Steve Kappelar

HEMS Pilot

Steve's Story.

Born and raised in Southern Saskatchewan, Steve has been flying since 1981, turning a lifelong passion for aviation into a career. He holds a Commercial Fixed-Wing Licence and has logged over 14,000 hours of flying time. His early flying days took him to the Arctic, where he herded reindeer and supported mineral exploration, followed by years of flying in forest fire suppression; everything from water bucketing to initial attack missions. These unique experiences shaped his skills and resilience as a pilot.

Steve joined HALO two years ago and values the opportunity to combine his two greatest passions: flying helicopters and helping people on some of their hardest days. He also appreciates that HALO’s work goes beyond medical missions, supporting counties with wildfires, assisting police forces, and more.

Outside of work, Steve enjoys life in Southern Alberta; whether that’s working through his “honey-do” list, escaping from it, or reliving his prairie childhood by shooting gophers. A fun fact about Steve: before becoming a pilot, he spent six years working in the funeral business, where he did everything from embalming to directing.

Steve is proud to be part of HALO’s dedicated team and grateful to live and work in a community he loves.
